  1. It really helps when you can pull from the students background. Sometimes children are more receptive to their classmates then they are to you on certain subjects. If a classmate finds something interesting or has some background in a subject, it can spark an interest in other students. I learn something knew from my students everyday. They all have different interests and knowledge bases and that knowledge needs to be acknowledged.

This picture reminds me of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (from the Bible.)Everyone has background knowledge... within the first few weeks of school, it would be a good idea to generate this knowledge, so the students realize that they have useful things to share with the class. This could probably be done through games, projects, or group activities.
